What are Terpenes?
Terpenes are aromatic compounds in cannabis (and many other plants) that give each strain its unique scent and flavor. They also contribute to the entourage effect, enhancing the effects of cannabinoids.
Here are some basic Terpenes -
- Myrcene: Known for its earthy, musky scent, myrcene is thought to have relaxing effects.
- Limonene: Offers a citrusy aroma and is believed to have mood-enhancing and anti-anxiety properties.
- Pinene: Found in pine needles, pinene has a fresh, pine-like aroma and may promote alertness and memory retention.
- Linalool: Floral and lavender-like in scent, linalool is often associated with relaxation and stress relief.
- Caryophyllene: Spicy and peppery, caryophyllene is unique because it also interacts directly with the CB2 receptor, contributing to anti-inflammatory effects.
What are Cannabinoids?
Cannabis contains over 100 different cannabinoids. These cannabinoids are chemical compounds that interact with the human body’s endocannabinoid system, influencing various physiological processes such as mood, pain sensation, appetite, and memory.
Here are some basic Cannabinoids -
- THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): The most well-known cannabinoid responsible for the psychoactive effects or "high" associated with cannabis.
- CBD (Cannabidiol): A non-psychoactive cannabinoid known for its potential therapeutic benefits, including reducing anxiety, pain, and inflammation.
- CBG (Cannabigerol): Often referred to as the "mother of all cannabinoids" because it serves as a precursor to other cannabinoids like THC and CBD.
- CBC (Cannabichromene): Known for its potential anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving, and neuroprotective properties.
- CBN (Cannabinol): Formed as THC ages, CBN is known for its potential sedative effects and is often used to promote sleep.
Interaction Between Terpenes and Cannabinoids:
Terpenes and cannabinoids work together in what’s known as the entourage effect. This means that the presence of multiple cannabinoids and terpenes can enhance the overall effects of cannabis, leading to a more balanced and tailored experience. For example, a strain with a specific combination of terpenes and cannabinoids might be particularly effective for pain relief, while another might be better suited for promoting sleep or reducing anxiety.
